Topic: Getting to know ViewState
Description:
ViewState is that part of ASP.Net we all have a love/hate relationship with, but it's not as bad as many think once you get to know it. In this presentation Tech Software's Walden Leverich will take a detailed look at ViewState, what it is and why (and when) we need it. We will look at the two component parts of ViewState, control state and true viewstate, when it's created and processed in the page lifecycle and why it's there at all. We will look at what goes into viewstate (and what doesn't), options for minimizing it, and best practices for its usage both pre and post ASP.Net 4.0. Options for decoding viewstate to see what's inside will be presented as well as settings you can use to prevent tampering and even decoding along with their implications. We will also look at Tech's ViewState in SQL product, what it does, why you'd want to use it, and most importantly, how it does what it does; we'll look at the code that makes it tick.

Bio:
Walden Leverich is the President and CEO of Tech Software, a software development and consulting company based in Melville, NY. He spends most of his (non-management) time working with customers to help them bring the data assets locked in their legacy systems to the Web. He is a member of the Microsoft IT Advisory Council, member of the Long Island .NET user group, Co-Chair of the LISTnet Cloud and SaaS SIG, and past president of the Long Island System Users Group. He is also a regular speaker at local and national user groups and conferences.
Walden is an escapee from Clarkson University where, other than things academic, he learned that NCAA Division 1 hockey is better enjoyed from the stands, water freezes at a temperature that isn't all that cold after all, and you can meet your wife in college. When not doing geeky computer things, Walden enjoys getting mud on his Jeep, photography and watching Manchester United kick butt. The proud father of two girls and one boy, he’s extremely happy he has an office to escape to each morning.
